Undergraduate Requirements

Major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies

The major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies consists of thirty (30) semester hours beyond the Liberal Studies requirement.  These hours must come from a list of approved courses and be completed with grades of "C-" or better.  At least three disciplines must be represented and at least twelve (12) of the total major hours must be at or above the 4000 level.

Students in the major can (but are not required to) chose between several concentrations, including Business; Cultures and Civilizations of Latin America; Development and Political Economy; History and Culture of the Caribbean; Human Rights; Latin American Arts; and Latino Studies.  Students with a concentration must have at least nine (9) credits in the area with courses approved by the advisor.

To qualify for completion of the major, the student must also have completed the initial sequence or equivalent of Spanish, Portuguese or another language relevant to this area of study.  (This may also be used to satisfy the language requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences.)

Students in the major should select a minor or a second major after consultation with the advisor.  The minor or second major should normally be in one of the participating departments or schools.  Please note that LACS does not "share" credits with minors and only shares up to six (6) hours of credit with cooperating departments.

Major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies with a Concentration in Business

The major in Latin America and Caribbean Studies with a Concentration in Business has all of the same requirements as the above major, with two exceptions.  First, a minor or a second major is not required.  Second, students are required to take the following courses: ACG 2021, ACG 2071, ECO 2013, ECO 2023, MAN 3240, MAR 3023, and any two additional business courses.  Please note that the student in this major may not use ECO 2013 and ECO 2023 to fulfill liberal studies requirements.

Honors in the Major

The Program offers honors in the major.  For requirements and other information, refer to "University Honors Office and Honor Societies" in the General Bulletin and the Honors Program website.

Minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies

The Program offers a minor consisting of twelve (12) semester hours.  Ideally, these courses should deal primarily with LACS rather than provide supporting material (the latter type of courses is indicated with an asterisk on all Program lists).  Please note that the minor in LACS does not "share" credits with Liberal Studies, majors, or additional minors.
