Undergraduate Program
The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Curricular Track treasures the interdisciplinary approach to education. A number of cooperating disciplines provide students with a solid grasp of Latin America's present and past, while emphasizing major aspects of the region's unique structures and those of the diaspora.
Students who major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies may choose to emphasize a particular area of their knowledge with one of our concentrations or complement their learning with another major or minor. The flexibility of the curriculum allows the student to pursue their interests while developing a critical understanding of the relations between disciplines, times, and peoples.
The Curriculum also offers a minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies for students majoring in another disciplines. This is an excellent option for students who wish to concentrate their work in a major discipline yet maintain a regional concentration.
We encourage all of our students to complement their studies with extracurricular events and activities, internships and volunteer work, and study abroad programs in Costa Rica and Panama. Students preparing for graduate school should consider pursuing honors within the major or a directed independent study (DIS) to gain experience in conducting and presenting original research. Depending on the area of emphasis selected, and the complementary major or minor, the program in LACS may be viewed as preparation for graduate school in various fields or as leading to professions in government and international service, multinational commerce, law, teaching, and translation.
